"Accurate medical information is clearly very important to the underwriter who is responsible for assessing you life insurance application. In practice you are asking him to take a financial risk based on your health and lifestyle. That's why he needs to be certain he has all the relevant up-to-date facts ", says Charles Challiner spokesman for Lloyds Insurance Underwriting.

Will I need a Medical?
The answer depends upon your medical history and the policy you've chosen.
After you receive your quotation, the have to complete an application form for the Life Insurance company. This form will include questions about your past and present medical record and a few questions about your parent's health record.
The Life Company will use this information to assess your application and to decide whether it needs more information about your health. However, a need for more medical information does not necessarily mean that you will need to have a medical examination. In the majority of such cases, the insurer writes to your Doctor for information (within you application, you will have signed an authority to permit the insurance company to obtain information from your Doctor.)
The insurance company may also ask for a second medical opinion or a completely up-to-date report on your health. In these circumstances the insurance company will ask you to have a medical examination.
A medical can be an assessment at a Medical Consultant's surgery or a short home visit by a nurse. It's up to the insurance company to decide. Either way, the insurance company will meet the full cost of the medical.
You are not entitled to see the medical report as it belongs to the insurance company. However, if anything is discovered that is concerning, the insurance company will usually let you and your Doctor know.
Finally, may we remind you to be totally truthful when you fill in your application. If you omit any medical information or you fail to tell the truth, then any subsequent claim could be totally invalidated.
